THE ISSAM FARES INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, in collaboration with the Public Policy and International Affairs Program at the Department of Political Studies and Public Administration , hosted a panel discussion titled: "Justice for Palestine: International Law and Beyond," on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. The panel included Karim Makdisi, Associate Professor of International Politics and Director of the PPIA Program at AUB; Nimer Sultany, Reader in Public Law at the School of Law, Gender, and Media - School of Oriental and African Studies; Samer Ghamroun, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Science - Saint-Joseph University and a Senior Researcher at Legal Agenda; and Zeina Jallad, a Research Fellow at the Institute for Global Law and Policy - Harvard Law School. The panel was convened and moderated by Jamil Mouawad, Assistant Professor of Politics and Policy at AUB.
The American University of Beirut's Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, Nature Conservation Center, and Faculty of Medicine, hosted a panel discussion titled "White Phosphorus Ammunition in South Lebanon: Impact, Management, and Policies." The panel included IFI Director Joseph Bahout, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine Thawrat El Zahran, Professor of Ecosystem Management & Interim Director of the Palestine Land Studies Center Rami Zurayk, Associate Director at AUB-NCC Antoine Kallab, and Lebanon Researcher at Human Rights Watch Ramzi Kaiss. The discussion, delving into multifaceted issues surrounding the use of white phosphorus in the region, was moderated by Suzanne Baaklini, a journalist from l'Orient Le Jour.
The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at the American University of Beirut, and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Regional Peace and Security Project, held the second edition of the Beirut Security Debates (BSD) on February 2, 2024 at IFI. The event, titled "The Gaza War and the Regional Turmoil in the Middle East," gathered local, regional, and international scholars, experts, and policymakers to analyze, discuss, and debate critical questions on security-related and geopolitical issues at this critical juncture for the region.
AGBU Lebanon, in collaboration with IFI and Lepsius Haus Potsdam, held a webinar titled “Pathways to Lasting Justice: Addressing Genocide and Ending Human Rights Violations in the Middle East” on December 7, 2023 to coincide with the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and its Prevention. The webinar consisted of two panels, “The International Protection System in MENA” and its role in preventing, ending, and punishing human rights violations against minorities in the region, and “Media and Public Opinion” to highlight their role in ending all forms of human rights violations.
On December 6, 2023, IFI hosted the launch of the “Plight of the Rightless: The Sequel”, a report that mapped comprehensively statelessness of Beirut and Mount Lebanon for the first time. The research was conducted by Siren Associates and INTERSOS, and funded by the European Union.
On October 26, 2023, IFI, in collaboration with the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, held an online panel discussion titled “Gaza’s Unfolding Tragedy: Palestinian and Regional Perspectives.” Moderated by Middle East Council on Global Affairs Fellow Omar H. Rahman, speakers included IFI Director Dr. Joseph Bahout, President of the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy Ines Abdel Razek, and IFI Distinguished Fellow Rami G. Khouri. The objective of the discussion was to look at the impact of the conflict on the domestic arena within Israel and the Palestinian territories, as well as to better understand the implications of the conflict’s regional and international spillover.
