THE ISSAM FARES INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
On June 26, 2024, our Institute in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Lebanon hosted the second launching event of our “Vulnerability Policy Tool” targeted towards representatives of INGOs based in Lebanon. Developed for 123 Lebanese coastal municipalities, the tool will allow them to build climate change resilience, and help them understand, identify, and manage vulnerabilities. This tool holds significant importance as it empowers municipalities in their efforts toward climate change resilience, informs stakeholders about the vulnerabilities specific to their areas of interest, as well as encourages engagement in activities aimed at enhancing resilience and sustainability. The launch and discussion took place in the presence of FES Lebanon’s Resident Representative Merin Abbas, IFI's Assistant Director Yara Mourad, IFI’s Climate Change team members Celine Yazbek and Samir Nassar, as well as IFI’s former Director of Climate Change & Environment Dr. Nadim Farajalla and former team member Manale Abou Dagher.
IFI Climate Change and Environment Project Coordinator Celine Yazbek presented the main findings for the 123 coastal cities, features of the tool and highlighted the results of two pilot studies in Batroun and Tyre, detailing the methodology used for the vulnerability assessments. This included insights into the data gathering process, types of data utilized, vulnerability components analyzed, and how the strengths and weaknesses of each coastal city were identified. The dashboard was showcased in detail, providing attendees with a firsthand look at the final product and demonstrating how the vulnerability policy tool operates.
