THE ISSAM FARES INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
On March 4, our Institute hosted a closed discussion on UNSC Resolution 1701 and the 2024 ceasefire agreement, gathering academics, media and representatives of the diplomatic community in Lebanon. The event took IFI’s comparative analysis of UNSCR 1701 and the ceasefire agreement - co-authored by IFI Director Joseph Bahout and IFI Regional & International Affairs Cluster Coordinator Yeghia Tashjian - as a basis for the discussion. Tashjian provided a brief introduction of the paper, which was followed by a discussion with AUB Associate Professor of International Politics and IFI University Fellow Karim Makdisi, and United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL)’s Chief of Staff and Principal Political Advisor Neeraj Singh.
The discussion and interventions assessed the resolution’s effectiveness, its implications for Lebanon and the broader regional context, as well as highlighted Lebanon’s precarious position, the contested nature of UNSCR 1701, limits to its effectiveness given ongoing violations and the challenges of Israeli expansionism. The comparative analysis can be found on the Institute’s website, available in English and Arabic. Comments are closed.
