THE ISSAM FARES INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) and the Political Science and Public Administration (PSPA) Society at the American University of Beirut (AUB), organized an online panel discussion titled "Implications of the Russia-Ukraine War on the Lebanese Economy". The webinar took place on Friday, April 29, 2022, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm on Zoom.
This event tackled the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the global and regional economies, particularly Lebanon's. Prominent experts discussed the inflation in the prices of various goods, such as gas and wheat, and how this inflation reflects on Lebanon’s economy, which has been struggling for almost 3 years. The Lebanese market heavily relies on imports. Yet, over the past 3 years, the Lebanese pound has lost more than 90 percent of its value and with the absence of subsidies, the implications of the war hit harder on Lebanon. This calls for alternative solutions to ensure food security in the country, which was also discussed by panelists. Panelists Lara Edtmüller Student Assistant, Department of Political Science, Aalborg University Martin Keulertz Assistant Professor in the Food Security Programme, AUB Fidele Byiringiro Economic Affairs Officer at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia Moderator Nadim Farajalla Director of the Climate Change and Environment Program at IFI Comments are closed.
