THE ISSAM FARES INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
On December 6, 2023, IFI hosted the launch of the “Plight of the Rightless: The Sequel”, a report that mapped comprehensively statelessness of Beirut and Mount Lebanon for the first time. The research was conducted by Siren Associates and INTERSOS, and funded by the European Union. The primary objective of the event was to unveil the report's most significant findings and draw attention to the pervasive issue of statelessness in Lebanon. The report, presented in the first segment by Theodore Caponis and Elias Dahrouge from Siren Associates, delved into crucial facts and statistics on the causes, categories, effects and coping mechanisms, as well as the myriad challenges faced by stateless individuals in Lebanon. The speakers provided a comprehensive overview of the report's content and outcomes, and invited participants to elaborate together on the recommendations and the way forward in addressing this issue.
Subsequently, the event transitioned into a panel discussion in its second segment. The panel, comprised of Judge Rana Akoum, Nadia Khoury, and Ghinwa Zahoui, engaged in a discourse moderated by Nadia Nameh, Refugee Research and Policy Project Coordinator at IFI. This discussion further illuminated the complexities of statelessness in Lebanon, offering insightful perspectives and analysis. The panelists delved into the challenges faced by stateless individuals, contributing to a holistic understanding of the issue. Comments are closed.
