 The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) hosted a Webinar with General John R. Allen, President of the Brookings Institution and former US Special Presidential Envoy to the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL. The webinar titled: "Terrorism and Counterterrorism in the MENA Region: Trends and Prospects" on Thursday, August 27, 2020, at 4:00 pm Beirut time, and was moderated by Dania Koleilat Khatib, Affiliated Scholar at the Issam Fares Institute. In this webinar, General Allen discussed the root causes of terrorism as well as potential ways to curb and ultimately overcome them. In this light, he provided a close assessment of the counterterrorism policies implemented by the US and Arab countries. Furthermore, the webinar addressed the terrorist threat to the region as opposed to the West, the rise of Salafi Jihadism, and the emergence of ISIS vis-a-vis its involvement in regional events such as the Iraqi war and the Arab spring.
